Algorithms |
[Math/Computer Science] |
|
| Overview: Algorithms are step-by-step instructions that computers
(or people, for that matter) can follow in order to solve problems. Mathematicians and computer scientists are constantly trying to come
up with new, more efficient algorithms for important problems. In this class, we'll first learn how to analyze algorithms. What does it
mean for an algorithm to be fast? What other goals might we have when designing them? We'll then learn about some well-known algorithms
for a variety of important problems: sorting, text search, route-finding on maps, and a variety of others. Along the way, students will
be challenged to come up with algorithms of their own. Note: This is not a computer programming class. The algorithms we'll be talking about are obviously important to computer programming, but we will be looking at them at a higher level, not implementing them in an actual programming language. |
